Hello and welcome to The No-Name Project!

We are a non-profit CIC based in Wigan that wanted to come together
and share with you some of our projects and local groups.

Wigan has adopted a citizen-led approach to tackle its social and economic concerns.
Known as the Wigan Deal, it prioritises improving the lives of residents.

The council has challenged engrained ways of working, and public services now seek to build on the experience and strengths of communities and to champion those who seek to innovate.

This unique approach has saved money, sustained services and, in some instances, even improved them. Where services have improved it’s been thanks to bold decisions to work differently.

Historically, Wigan came to be known for its industrial topography – chimneys, canals and coal mines. When novelist George Orwell visited the town before World War II to document the bleak living conditions of the working classes.

He described the landscape as a monstrous scenery of slag-heaps, chimneys, piled scrap-iron, foul canals, paths of cindery mud criss-crossed with prints of clogs.

Today Wigan has been transformed into decent, affordable housing, and those old mines have resulted in a vast network of nature reserves.

The town’s slogan is Believe in Wigan. Right now, it’s hard not to.

Wigan Borough encompasses the two main towns of Wigan and Leigh,
which are among a number of smaller towns and villages in the former Lancashire coalfield.

With 70 per cent green space, the borough boasts a beautiful Greenheart stretching from Leigh through to Haigh Woodland Park and includes beautiful parks, woodlands, wetlands, canals and green spaces for visitors to enjoy.

The borough also has a growing cultural offer, with the region’s artists and creatives showcasing their work in The Fire Within exhibition in Wigan town centre.

The award winning Museum of Wigan Life is also a popular attraction,
along with the Leigh Turnpike Gallery.

Sitting comfortably between Manchester and Liverpool, Wigan Borough prides itself on a healthy mix of character and heritage with a vibrant mixture of amenities including great shopping facilities and an array of eateries, pubs and bars.
