Wigan Litter Pickers was started as a Facebook group on 19th February 2021 as part of a response to a post that was placed in a fellow community group "I'm from Wigan Me". It has over 40000 members and the post saying that we had just had some free litter picking equipment delivered from the council very quickly attracted 1000 likes.
We realised that there were many more like-minded people in the area which wanted to contribute to cleaning up our town. So we set up a group and shared it.
In just 7 weeks it has achieved over 1000 members.
The group is very friendly, helpful, supportive, and we have come across the most kindhearted and enthusiastic people through the group.
We have just added a reward scheme for our younger members where their adults can nominate them as Young Litter Picker of the Week and it is drawn weekly from a hat.
We try to pick responsibly by recycling what we can and always working in partnership with as many groups as possible to keep improving things.
Credit goes to the Council for offering their full support but more importantly to the people of Wigan for embracing it so wholeheartedly.
